Continuous spikes suggest mountain tracks with pine needles. The pattern is realized by Katazome technique.
The original pattern of a leading draper of the time (at the end of the Edo Period).
Kumadori is a peculiar style of makeup used in kabuki in which the red, blue, brown, and black cosmetics are painted on an actor's face to emphasize the nature of the character he plays.

These tiniest possible dots are realized by the Chusen technique.
The name of this pattern is also known as a music piece of the court music. This pattern was very populat in the Genroku-period (A.D. 1688-1704) as it was oftern designed by a famous lacquer craftsman (Kanshichi Seikai 青海勘七) at that time. This pattern is called Seikai-ha in Japanese (Seikai= Blue ocean, ha=wave). It is one of the typical auspicious symbol.
